The member of the Islamic State (outlawed in Russia) who was second in command directing the terror group's operations in Somalia was killed in an airstrike on Sunday, the US AfricaCommand (AFRICOM) said in a press release.

"At this time, it is assessed this airstrike killed only [Abdulhakim] Dhuqub and destroyed one vehicle," the release said on Monday. "Currently, we assess no civilians were injured or killed as a result of this airstrike."

AFRICOM explained in the release that Dhuqub was responsible for the daily operations of the terrorist group, including attack planning and weapons procurement.

US forces continue to work with Somali partners to keep pressure on the Islamic State as well as the al-Shabab terror networks, AFRICOM Director of Operations Maj. Gen. Gregg Olson said in the release.

"When it supports the strategy, we use precision airstrikes to target those who plan and carry out the violent extremist activities that put Somalis at risk," Olson said.

In support of the Somali Federal government of Somalia US forces will use all effective and appropriate methods to assist in the protection of the Somali people, including partnered military counterterrorism operations, AFRICOM said.
